The Future Needs People Who Can Feel

Yesterday we talked about which jobs and activities will still be needed in the future. A conversation about artificial intelligence, about professions that are changing, and about people who have to find a new direction.

As we reflected on it, we realised how quickly our attention lands on the outer questions: What can machines take over? Which skills will become important for us? What do we need to learn to keep finding our place? And how little space is often given to what all these changes stir up inside us.

Because behind the question of our professional future there is a human being. Someone who has built something over many years, who fulfils a task and has found part of their identity in it. When that task is suddenly called into question, it touches far more than the next career step. It touches the feeling of being needed, of belonging and of being able to contribute something. The question «What do I do now?» then reaches deep into the question «Who am I when this falls away?».

We believe that this is where one of the great human tasks and professions of the coming time lies. While we learn to deal with new technologies, we also need to learn to deal with what they move in us. With the fear of being left behind. With the anger that something we relied on is changing. With the grief for a life plan that can no longer continue the way it was. And with the helplessness of being expected to move on, even though inside there is no ground yet for the next step.

We know these moments from our work. A person understands that a change is coming and still cannot open up to it. In conversation, ideas emerge, but in the body everything contracts. The breath becomes shallow, the belly tight, the thoughts circle around the same fears. Then we meet an experience that can hardly be reached with good arguments alone. The body needs time, contact and the possibility to feel what has not had any space until now.

How are we supposed to walk openly into a future when we need all our strength to hold back our fear of it?

As long as we are fighting for survival inside, our view becomes narrow. We reach for familiar solutions, hold on to what has carried us so far and try to regain control as quickly as possible. That is understandable. In this state, however, it is hard to let something new emerge. Creativity needs a certain amount of room. It needs the experience of being able to be present with an open question without losing ourselves in it.

This room can grow when we reconnect with our body and our feelings. When fear is allowed to be spoken without someone immediately trying to make it go away. When anger finds a conscious expression and grief does not have to be skipped. When a person experiences: I can feel this, and I am not alone with it. From experiences like these, a trust can arise that carries us even when we do not yet know how things will go on.

For us, this is a very concrete form of being ready for the future. It shows in our ability to meet uncertainty, accept help, perceive our limits and try out new steps. In sensing what is true for us, instead of heading in any direction out of fear. And in staying in contact with others, even when we ourselves have no finished answers.

The possibilities of artificial intelligence therefore also bring us to a question about our human abilities. If we can hand over tasks that take up a lot of time and mental energy, what do we want to use the space that opens up for? What attention do we give to our experience, our relationships and the way we want to live together?

Our feelings hold an orientation that we often first have to get to know again. We can notice where we override ourselves, where something becomes too much, where we close down and where life rises in us. The body lets us experience how we respond to a situation long before we find clear words for it. Listening to this perception, understanding it and dealing with it responsibly is an ability that matures through our own experience.

And for this we need people who can open such spaces.

People who stay present in times of uncertainty, who respect protection and recognise when a process needs time. People who support others in finding contact with their own perception again. In body-therapeutic work, touch can be a way in; a conversation, a conscious movement or a moment of silence held together can also set something in motion. What matters is the quality of the contact and the sensitivity for what is right for each person in that moment.

Anyone who already accompanies people knows the moments when something deeper becomes visible behind a seemingly clear concern. Someone comes because of physical tension, and suddenly grief appears. A professional decision leads straight into the fear of rejection. In a yoga class it becomes tangible how much effort a person puts into keeping themselves under control. Moments like these need sensitivity, experience and an understanding of one's own possibilities and limits.

This is where our Emotional Therapeutic Coach Training comes in. We want to pass on our experience from more than twenty years of body therapy, emotional work and spiritual guidance, and support people in experiencing these connections for themselves. To perceive feelings, to understand protective mechanisms, to include the body and to accompany processes in a way that allows a person to stay with their own experience.

We see this as work with a future. Because every outer change also has to be lived inwardly. Because we need people with whom we can share our fear and find our confidence again. And because from the connection with ourselves, a different readiness grows to help shape life.

We do not know which forms of work and living together will emerge in the coming years. But we can begin today to strengthen the ground for them: in our body, in our feeling and in the way we meet one another.

If you would like to deepen this work and accompany people on their path, we warmly invite you to our Emotional Therapeutic Coach Training. We start live online on Sunday, 25 October. It is still possible to join spontaneously.
