Escaping the Inner Cage

_How Body and Mind Hold Us Captive_

Most of the cages we humans live in have no visible bars.

We can travel, change relationships, make new decisions, switch careers, meditate, keep growing – and still find ourselves again and again at the same invisible limits: the same fears, inner tensions, conflicts and thoughts that keep us from truly meeting life with openness.

We did not build this inner cage consciously. It grew out of experiences, out of wounds and adaptations, out of all the moments in which our body and our thinking had to learn how to protect us, how to secure belonging and how to avoid pain.

What was once an intelligent response to a difficult experience becomes, over time, an unconscious limitation.

A protective movement becomes a posture.
A posture becomes a body feeling.
A body feeling becomes an identity.

And at some point we believe: this is just who I am.

The Physical Cage

Our body doesn't simply forget what we have been through.

Experiences leave traces in the nervous system, in our muscles and fascia, in the way we breathe, move, allow ourselves to be touched and meet other people. If closeness was once unsafe, the body may withdraw. If we had to suppress our expression, tension may settle in the jaw, the chest or the pelvis. If we learned to always be strong, the body may lose its ability to let itself be held.

The body begins to respond to the present with the experiences of the past.

It contracts before anything has actually happened. It holds on even though the danger is long gone. It protects us from a touch, an emotion or an aliveness that might be healing today.

This physical cage cannot be opened by understanding alone, because the body doesn't automatically follow what we have recognized in our thoughts. It needs a new, direct experience.

Through conscious bodywork, mindful touch, movement, breath and emotional experience, the body can discover that today it is no longer where the original wound arose. It can begin to let go, to reorient itself and to allow movements again that have been held back for a long time.

This is not about forcing the body open. It is about giving it a space in which it can discover for itself that more is possible: more breath, more sensation, more mobility, more trust and more aliveness.

In our workshops Art of Deep Bodywork and Emotional Healing we open exactly this space of experience. The body is not corrected, but listened to. Tension is not fought, but understood in its original intelligence – until holding on is no longer necessary.

The Mental Cage

The second cage is made of thoughts, inner images, conclusions and behavioral patterns that have developed out of our experiences.

We don't just see the world as it is right now. We see it through what we have learned about it.

If we were hurt, we may expect to be hurt again. If we didn't feel seen, we may still be looking for signs today that we don't matter. If love came with conditions, we may still try to secure closeness through adapting, achieving or withdrawing.

From the stored images of the past, our thinking creates a parallel world that feels completely real. We then no longer meet only the person standing in front of us, but at the same time all the people who have hurt us before. We react not only to the present situation, but to the meanings, memories and expectations our thinking has laid over it.

Reality can be open while our thinking has already detected a danger.
Life can be inviting us while our inner image holds us back.
Someone can love us while we are still trying to get the love we lacked back then.

And so we live inside a world created by thought and mistake its limits for the limits of life.

Getting out of this cage doesn't mean thinking less or overcoming the mind. It means going into it, recognizing its structure and discovering from which experiences, fears and images of separation our thinking has arisen.

That is why in our course Enlighten Your Mind we don't go beyond the mind. We go into it – and transform the structure of thinking through which we experience ourselves, other people and life.

In our private sessions, too, we accompany people in making the very personal connections between their experiences, feelings, physical reactions and current life patterns visible and tangible.

Body and Mind Belong Together

The physical and the mental cage are not separate from each other.

A thought can make the body contract, and a physical tension can bring up the same thoughts again and again. An old emotion can shape our perception, while a certain belief prevents that emotion from ever being fully felt.

That is why it is often not enough to just talk about what happened. At the same time, working only with the body is not always enough if the inner images and conclusions remain untouched.

Real change happens when body, feeling, thinking and awareness are connected with each other again.

This very connection is the heart of our Emotional Therapeutic Coach training. There we teach a way of working that brings together emotional process work, body awareness, therapeutic conversation, an understanding of trauma and Spiritual Embodiment – for people who want to integrate these levels into their own lives or into their work with others.

In our Private Retreats in various places around the world, an intense, personal space opens up in which we can work on all levels over several days: with bodywork, emotional processes, conversation, meditation and Satsang. Not according to a fixed program, but attuned to the person and to what truly wants to show itself and change in that moment.

You Don't Have to Blow Up the Cage

The inner cage is not our enemy. It was once a place of shelter.

That is why we don't have to destroy it by force. We can begin to perceive its walls, understand how it came to be, and allow our body and our thinking experiences that go beyond what we have known so far.

Perhaps, as you read this, you can already feel where your own cage has become narrower.

Where is your body holding on to something that is no longer necessary today?
Which thoughts keep telling you the same story?
Where are you still reacting to a past while present life has long been offering something new?

Freedom doesn't only begin once all conditioning has disappeared.

It begins in the moment we recognize that the limits of our inner cage are not the limits of life.

You don't have to escape all at once. It is enough to stop taking the first bar for a part of yourself.

If you would like to explore this path together with us, you will find different spaces for it in our workshops, private sessions, the Enlighten Your Mind course, the Emotional Therapeutic Coach training and our worldwide Private Retreats.
