What Is Awakening?
May 22, 2025
Awakening, simply explained?
Awakening is not a state you can reach. It is not a spiritual reward, not a goal you could work your way towards. It is rather a radical recognition – waking up from the illusion of separateness. This awakening has nothing to do with outer circumstances. It is an inner seeing, a breaking through of the familiar concepts about self, world and life.
The "I" – an illusion?
Over the past decades, modern neuroscience has produced findings that confirm this ancient mystical knowledge in remarkable ways. Studies in the field of cognitive neuroscience show that what we experience as "I" has no fixed, locatable center in the brain. The neuroscientist Thomas Metzinger describes the "I" as a mental self-model – a useful construction, but not the truth.
This means: our sense of a stable "I am" is basically a neural simulation. What Eastern wisdom traditions have described for thousands of years as the illusion of the ego can today also be demonstrated with imaging techniques: the brain creates a coherent self-image by putting together sense impressions, thoughts and memories – but this self-image is changeable, fleeting, constructed.
What remains when the construction falls away?
And that is exactly what happens in awakening: the identification with this self-image breaks away. What remains is not emptiness – but spaciousness. Not loss – but arrival. "I am someone" gives way to the simple "I am". Without form, without story. Simply being.
No method leads there – but you can allow yourself to be touched
Awakening remains a mystery. It cannot be explained, repeated or manipulated. And yet you can open yourself to it – through presence, through sincerity, through honestly exploring your direct experience.
Neuroscience confirms that our brain is plastic – in other words, malleable. This means that old patterns and beliefs really can be let go of. New neural connections don't arise through intellectual knowledge, but through lived experience. And that is exactly where the beauty lies: in embodiment. In a truth that isn't thought, but lived.
Life after awakening
Awakening is not a goal but a beginning. A new beginning – quiet, unknown, open. In the eyes of science it is a reorganization of consciousness. In the language of the heart it is simply: coming home.
What is awakening?
It is not a state you reach.
It is reality when all the false ideas about ourselves fall away.
A return.
A liberation from narrowness.
A deep, quiet recognition of what we truly are.
Healed.
Whole.
One.
🙏
We are happy to accompany you and help in a direct and honest way.
