Learning Beyond the Bell | Unschooling

How homeschooling has changed our family
School begins at home – or in the heart
When we think of school, we often think of classrooms, timetables and homework stress. But what if school could be completely different? More alive. More human. More deeply connected to real life?
For us, homeschooling – or rather living with learning – has become a powerful path: as a family, as parents and as companions of our daughter Khaleesi. It's not a perfect path, but a living one. And that's exactly why we want to share what it has done for us.
The school system – an overlooked stress factor
Scientific studies (e.g. Hurrelmann & Andresen, 2023) show that children are under growing psychological pressure at school. Pressure to perform, social tensions, being overwhelmed by rigid curricula.
What often gets lost in the process? The relationship. The curiosity. The aliveness.
We had the feeling that our daughter was drifting away from us bit by bit – not only physically, but inwardly. And we didn't want to accept that.
Learning in relationship – and in real life
When we build bridges together today, solve maths problems together or walk through the Natural History Museum in New York, that isn't a lesson. It's life.
We see how Khaleesi blossoms – with frustrations, successes and aha moments. And we are there. Live. Not just hearing about it afterwards.
For us, that is bonding. Education within connection. Learning with soul.
Conflicts are part of it – and they foster growth
Of course homeschooling isn't free of conflict.
But for us that isn't a disadvantage, it's a space for maturing.
We are body therapists, coaches and teachers – we know that real development happens at the edges. Conflicts are not failure, but points of contact with something new.
When you try to teach your child something and it doesn't work – that's exactly where development begins.
No grades – trusting the inner rhythm
We test. But we don't grade.
Why? Because learning is not a linear process. Sometimes a topic needs to rest – and months later it suddenly comes quite easily.
Brain research (Gerald Hüther) emphasizes that learning happens in an emotionally safe space. Grades often lead to fear – and fear is the greatest obstacle to learning.
With us, Khaleesi learns at her own pace – and the result is not less "success", but deeper integration.
Unschooling doesn't mean chaos – but real creativity
Instead of pushing through curricula, we shape things together.
We follow interests, play, experiment, take breaks, bake cakes, sing. Learning isn't separate from life – it is life.
And along the way we discover: we ourselves are learning again too. With curiosity. With joy. With heart.
Social contacts – different, but not fewer
A frequently mentioned criticism is the "lack of social life".
But Khaleesi has a worldwide network of friends – from Bali to Berlin. She does sports, circus, martial arts, ballet – she finds connection everywhere.
And what happens quite naturally along the way: she learns openness, self-confidence, flexibility and connection across very different cultures.
She is not alone – she is freely connected.
Learning that goes deep
What touches us most? Seeing how Khaleesi learns.
How she suddenly starts to read – without us being able to say exactly how it "happened".
Learning often happens beyond method. It happens in the body, in the space between words, in the freedom of not having to understand, but being allowed to understand.
For us, this is also spiritual learning: not conditioned imitation, but living unfolding.
Part of our awakening: learning as lived non-duality
For us, homeschooling is not an educational experiment. It is part of our path.
We accompany people in awakening – and learning in our family is an expression of that too:
Beyond the norm. In relationship. In openness.
Our daughter doesn't live "against the system", but in freedom within the system.
And that is exactly what we wish for more families: to know that this is possible.
An invitation to reflect
We don't want to convert anyone. We want to tell our story. Share. Perhaps inspire.
What does education mean to you? What is learning really? And how could you rediscover your child (and yourself) as a learning being – not as a performance unit to be optimized?
