Experiencing Immortality

Experiencing Immortality

Why some experiences change us forever – and others don't. Why certain encounters, places or moments resonate deep within us and set something in motion, while others pass us by almost without a trace.

In our retreats and in Satsang we often talk about how important it is not just to chase after experiences – but to truly live them. There is a difference. A palpable one. And this difference can be the key to real change, to transformation.

Recently we were in Sequoia National Park. A place full of ancient giant sequoias that radiate a stillness and strength we have rarely felt. And yet I – Kareem – had been in exactly that place 40 years ago. Back then I saw the same trees, photographed them, marveled, and drove on. It was an experience – but it didn't change me.

This time it was a living experience.
A pausing.
A sinking in.
Something synchronized between the ancient, silent power of these trees and something within me.
And suddenly something moved. A touch. Not outwardly – but in my innermost being.

Perhaps it's because we listen differently today. Because we have become quieter inside. Because we are ready to be touched – not just to consume. For us, that is the difference between having an experience and truly living it.

Experience often comes from the mind.
Living it comes from being.

You can have a thousand experiences – through travel, books, seminars, even through Satsang – and still remain untouched inside. Because nothing is really allowed to sink in. Because nothing enters into relationship with you. Truly living something is different. It is deep contact. An opening. An encounter. A yes.

And this can happen when you become still. When you receive. When you no longer search, but feel.

The giant sequoias are not sacred because they are old. They are sacred because they don't want to impress. Because they simply are. And that is exactly where their power lies. Their dignity. Their invitation to us: to linger, to open up, to let ourselves be reminded that this immortality lives in us too.

Sometimes people in our retreats tell us: "I've already had many experiences of oneness." And we often ask: "And what has changed in your life?" Not as criticism, but out of genuine curiosity. Because real experience transforms you.
But only if it passes through you.
Only if you don't try to hold on to it.
Only if you are willing not to remain the same.

Maybe you have felt this too.
It's not what you experience, but how deeply you allow it.
How ready you are to let yourself be touched.

And sometimes, when you really go into this living experience –
your breath suddenly changes.
Or your gaze.
Or your stance in life.
Not spectacularly. But quietly.
Like a tree that grows without knowing it.

That is what we wish for you.
That you don't just experience life – but truly live it.
That you don't just search, but are found.
By the stillness.
By the depth.
By the sacred in the everyday.

And perhaps you'd like to ask yourself sometime:
What truly touched me today?
Not impressed me – but moved me?

In this question lies the key.

With love from the depth of our journey,
from the forests of California
and from the stillness of the moment,

Reflection prompts for you:

  • When was the last time you didn't just experience something, but truly felt it?
  • Which experience in your life has moved you deeply – and why?
  • Where might you still be collecting experiences without really opening yourself to them?
  • How can you allow life to touch you today?

From a scientific perspective:
Neuroscientific studies show that real change in the brain arises through emotionally meaningful, physically integrated experiences – not through intellectual understanding. Only when an inner aha! is also felt physically and emotionally do new neural pathways form (cf. Siegel, 2020; Cozolino, 2017).
