The Search for – or the Addiction to – the "I"
Jul 04, 2021
Without our noticing, consciousness keeps searching life for the same thoughts – thoughts that trigger the same feelings and the same actions! In this cycle of searching, only the imagined "I" is ever found and nourished.
Finding the familiar thought seems to feel safe. The more we want to be safe, or the more afraid we are, the stronger the dependency becomes on always thinking, feeling and acting the same way. The fear of life's unpredictability, and not recognizing our true nature, keep us searching – and everything familiar seems better to us than this infinite emptiness and uncertainty of life.
We are all addicted to the "I-thought-feeling", and it needs constant confirmation from the thoughts and feelings it knows. By wanting certain thoughts or rejecting them, the glue of attachment is created – and the search begins, and with it the addiction. Whether they cause suffering or not, our thoughts give us the security of the familiar.
Which thought are you addicted to? Which thought do you know that keeps coming back in your life? What feeling or what actions are triggered by this thought? Would you now like to read how to get out of this addiction? Probably not with a new thought that will one day become an addiction again!
No – liberation only happens when the source of perception, of thoughts, feelings and actions explores itself. There is no shortcut, and no answer that will set us free. So take the time to explore… There is no other way than to find the thinker and to expose it for what it is. Until every thought finds its home, every feeling is allowed to be here, and perception recognizes its origin in the truth of self-inquiry.
